Significant Achievements of the Department in the Past
Organised need based short-term content updating programmes in the areas of Modern Surveying (Total Station & GPS), Geographical Information System, Modern Construction Materials & Techniques, Computer Applications in Civil Engineering, CAD, Special topics on Structural Engineering, Modelling, Animation and Project Management for the benefits of teachers of Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges.
Organised leading edge value addition programme on Emerging areas of GIS, Project Management, CAD and Modern Surveying to the working professionals of various organizations like PWD, Central Ground Water Board, Tamilnadu Water supply & Drainage Board, Private IT company and Productivity council.
Organised, from time to time, Curriculum Development Workshops to devise new curricula of special diploma & post diploma courses and to revise existing curricula for the Directorates of Technical Education in the Southern States and autonomous Polytechnics as well.
Actively involved in the long term courses like B.Tech. Ed., Dip.TT, M.Tech.HRD, PGDCA, and Overseas Teachers programmes handling classes in the areas of Civil Engineering contents, Instructional Methods & Media, Curriculum Development, Evaluation Techniques, CAD, Computer Applications and Educational Innovations. Developed learning materials for the said subject areas.
The department has organised 4 National/International Seminars, 6 ISTE Summer Schools, 1 Colombo Plan Staff College in country programme and 1 Open House Exhibition.
Published 6 text books, 16 booklets/monographs, 9 laboratory/drawing manual and 10 question banks which are very popular amongst the students/teachers.
Under Continuing Education Project of ISTE, 6 modules were prepared in the areas of Structural Engineering, CAD, Data Processing and Project Management. The modules were well received by the staff of industrial organizations also.
Collected data and compiled a report on ‘A Case Study on Policies, Planning and Administration of Technical and Vocational Education in India’, which was published by UNESCO as a country report.
Brought out an educational film on ‘Canal Irrigation System’, 5 video programmes (which were telecast in Gyandharshan TV) on emerging areas of Civil Engineering and a number of power point presentations.
Successfully completed a MHRD project on the thrust area of a local problem entitled ‘Solid Waste Management using GIS for Chennai City’. The final report of the project was forwarded to the Corporation of Chennai for the consideration and planning.

Preparation of thematic maps of Cauvery Basin using map conversion and Atlas preparation techniques.
Current Activities and Services Provided by the Department
Organising subject updating programmes for the teachers of Engineering Colleges/Polytechnics in identified emerging areas of technology.
Organising a few pedagogy courses on ‘Instructional Design and Delivery System’ for teachers of Engineering Colleges and also serving as resource persons in such programmes organised by other departments.
Involve as active resource persons in OTC programmes on ‘Advanced Certificate Course in Curriculum Design and Instructional Materials Development’ & ‘Environmental Management and Sustainable Development’.
Organising programmes on GIS and Modern Surveying for the officers of ONGC and Central Ground Water Board.
Assisting the Directorates of Technical Education and Universities in the revision of curriculum from time to time.
Developing instructional materials/media in the modern civil engineering areas particularly involving computer applications for use of teachers, students and professionals.
Involving actively in the production of video programmes suitable for Ekalvaya, Gynandharshan E-class and Virtual University requirements.
Equipping the department infrastructural facilities with modern instruments and updated softwares.
Developing the existing GIS Lab. into a Spatial Information Technology Centre.

Besides conventional Surveying instruments, Modern Total Stations, Differential GPS and handheld GPS navigators.
